2024 BTSC Pentathlon Highlights

Alexandra Harrison

The Barrie Trojans were host to the Pentathlon swim meet Mar. 1 - 3, 2024. This is a fun and unique event where swimmers compete in groups of five events (sprint, mid-distance, ironman) where total times for each athlete are calculated with the swimmer achieving the lowest cumulative time is declared the winner for each age category. Amazingly, after swimming more than 43 minutes total, one of the ironman age groups was decided by 5 seconds.  A total of 374 swimmers representing Peterborough, Orangeville, Orillia, Oakville and the Barrie Trojan swim clubs participated. Congratulations to all of the BTSC swimmers for which Pentathlon was their first ever competitive meet!

The weekend was filled with highlights. The “coaches’ swim of the weekend" was Nathan Douglas' 800 free for achieving his first ever OYJ qualifying standard. Coach Rocco swam butterfly for his entire 1500M event, quite an accomplishment, though he needs to work on his splits as the last half of his race was slower than the first. Personal best times were achieved in 56% of the BTSC swims. Congratulations to all of our bell ringer winners; we all benefited from your enthusiasm.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who supported the meet. A special thank you goes out to Rob Meeuwse (Meet Manager) and Kelly McCrae (Competition Coordinator) for all of their hard work organizing and running an excellent meet. We also had a number of Barrie Trojan volunteer officials who received 18 total sign-offs for various officiating roles as they work their way up the officials qualification ladder. Congratulations to Alexandra Harrison who received the required sign offs to support achievement of Level II Official status. This follows Laura and Mark Vaughan, and Stephanie Tavitian-Guthrie who all reached Level III Official certification at the Short Course Regional meet. It is great to see so many parents giving their time to volunteering as officials so that our swimmers can continue to experience great events like Pentathlon in their home pool.
