Highlights of BTSC at NYAC Cup 2025
Our athletes were at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre the weekend of Nov. 14-16 to compete at the NYAC Cup. BTSC was one of 36 clubs participating at the meet which included teams from Quebec and Atlantic Canada. This was a higher level competition that included participation from members of the Canadian senior national team. Here are the highlights for the over 80 BTSC swimmers competing at NYAC Cup.
***Alessa Darby broke a provincial record in the Para S6 classification. She broke her own 400m freestyle record with a time of 6:58.76.***
Racing on Friday
Our younger swimmers were in the pool for the afternoon session.
Esther Kim and Oscar Round won bronze medals in the 200M backstroke. Esther’s finish time was 31 seconds better than her seed time, allowing her to jump many seed positions on her way to the podium finish.
The following swimmers raced to top ten finishes.
Esther Kim used a 6 second improvement over her 100M freestyle seed time to finish 4th. Sophie Bowen touched the wall significantly faster (1 minute 7 seconds) than her entry time to grab 4th place in her 400M IM swim. Oscar Round had 5th and 6th place finishes in the 50M fly and 200M back respectively. His 50M fly swim was 5 seconds quicker then before he jumped in the pool. Eva Beaudry and William Rupay cracked the 100M freestyle top 10 by placing 6th and 7th. 200M backstroke racing saw Dylan Jackson place 7th. Alexa Mackie had two top 10’s by finishing 8th in 100M free and 10th in 50M fly. Jessica Enwright was 10th in her 100M free race.
There were a number of notable swims on the first day as summarized below.
Emma Mackie went 17 seconds faster in her 200M breast. Emma Beland and Kloe-Gervais Osmond had 5 and 6 second better times in their 50m fly races. In the 200M backstroke, Mila Anitiquera bettered her entry time by 41 seconds while Sarah Leahy went 14 seconds faster in the same race. Chase Turner had an 8 second improvement in the same event for boys. Andrew Bin and Finn Harrison dropped 8 and 4 seconds respectively from their 50M fly entry times. Layne Sutherland finished 8 seconds faster in her 50M breast and 6 seconds quicker in her 100m free.
In the morning session the older swimmers vied for spots in the finals races. The morning session also included timed finals for 400M IM where Blayke Taylor raced to the 13-14 year old bronze medal with a BTSC top 10 historical time. Marissa Battrick and Clara Vilchez finished in 5th and 6th places. Kaelyn Vroom placed 8th in her 15-16 year old race. Swims of note were had by Emma Vaughan who bettered her seed time by 13 seconds, Reese Anderson who dropped 14 seconds and Cassidy Meeuwse who went 10 seconds faster. The boys racing saw Tyler Millar win the 15-16 year old bronze medal using a 17 second faster clocking than his entry time. His time was also a top 10 historical BTSC time. His teammates, Griff Seguin and Evan Beatty were close behind in 4th and 5th places while Will McConachie finished 8th. Lucian Vilchez also claimed a bronze medal in the 17 year old and over age group using a finish time 7 seconds better than his seeding. It was also a top 10 time in BTSC history.
Lucian Vilchez set a new 15-17 year old Club record for the 100M freestyle with a time of 51.03. He placed 4th overall. Blayke Taylor and Kenzie Sparrow were 5th and 6th in their 100M freestyle final. Both broke the 1 minute barrier to record top 10 BTSC times. Ameliya Suleimanov was 5th in her age group while Harrison Levene finished 9th in his race. Clara Vilchez, Dorothy Dong, Tate Devroom, Tyler Millar and Griff Seguin earned another swim by qualifying for B finals.
Nikita Manziy had a breakthrough race in his preliminary 200M breastroke race, dropping 13 seconds from his seed time. He carried that momentum into finals where he earned the bronze medal with a time that was 3rd fastest in BTSC history for his age group. Kaelyn Vroom placed 6th and Sam Brundage was 8th overall in their finals races. Reese Anderson, Eva Mankarios, Rydaar Watt, and Will McConachie all qualified for B finals. Of note, James Mancini had a 26 second time improvement over his entry time in preliminary swimming.
The 50M butterfly finals resulted in Blayke Taylor and Clara Vilchez winning the silver and bronze medals. Blayke’s time of 28.91 set a new Club record. Clara’s time also eclipsed the previous Club record time and is now the second fastest in BTSC history. Kenzie Sparrow, Ameliya Suleimanov, and Avah-Skye Miller finished 7th, 8th and 10th overall for their age groups. Noemi Blake and Will McConachie were B finalists.
Harrison Levene used the 4th fastest time for 13-14 year olds in BTSC history to claim the 200M backstroke gold medal. Evan Beatty and Lucian Vilchez both raced to bronze medals for their age categories. In girls racing, Sam Takacs placed 6th, Marissa Battrick 7th and Dorothy Dong 10th. Edwin Huang and Nathan Vaughan had preliminary swims that earned them lanes in the B finals.
Sam Brundage touched the wall after 50M of breaststroke in the silver medal position. Her time was the 3rd fastest in BTSC history. Nikita Manziy, Daniel Eperjessy and Noemi Blake were top 10 finishers placing 4th, 9th and 9th. Nikita’s time is a BTSC top 10 of all time. Dylan George, Reese Anderson, Molly Robinson and Sienna Bin swam in B finals.
Saturday Racing
Esther Kim started the afternoon for BTSC with a bronze medal performance in 50M freestyle for 10 year olds and under. Her time was a BTSC top 10 in Club history. Emma Beland placed 10th. For the boys, Oscar Round used a 3 second best time to finish 4th. In the older age group, Alexa Mackie and William Rupay placed 5th in their respective races.
100M backstroke racing had Esther Kim, Oscar Round and Dylan Jackson place 4th, 5th and 8th respectively. Macie Bortolussi had an excellent swim dropping 11 seconds from her entry time.
Oscar Round had a bronze medal swim in the 200M IM. Esther Kim and William Rupay cracked the top 10, placing 6th and 10th.
In the 400M freestyle, Sophie Bowen sped to a silver medal finish. Her time is a BTSC historical top 10. Dylan Jackson placed 6th in her race with a time that was 32 seconds quicker than her entry time. Andia Hakimian bettered her entry time by 35 seconds and Andrew Bin went 33 seconds faster.
Saturday morning had timed finals for the 400M freestyle. Alessa Darby broke her own provincial record for the Para S6 classification by touching the wall in a time of 6:58.76. Griff Seguin swam to a bronze medal finish. Lucian Vilchez raced to a 4th place result in his age group. Rydaar Watt and Nikita Manziy dropped 22 and 27 seconds respectively from their entry times. For the 13-14 year old girls, Marissa Battrick completed the 400M in 4th place with Kenzie Sparrow and Harper Ferguson placing 9th and 10th. Maggie Taylor finished the race 26 seconds faster than her entry time while Leah Martin and Reese Anderson had 16 and 9 second improvements. For the older girls, Gaby McFarland also had a notable swim, touching the wall 16 seconds sooner than her seed time.
Saturday night finals featured the older swimmers who qualified via their preliminary swims in the morning.
The first event of finals, the 100m backstroke saw Lucian Vilchez establish a new Club record (15-17 year old and open) time of 56.06 on his way to grabbing the silver medal. Evan Beatty placed 8th in his final race while Nathan Vaughan and Daniel Eperjessy swam in the B final. Clara Vilchez reached the finish with the second fastest time in BTSC history to place 4th in her race. Ameliya Suleimanov placed 4th in her age group with a top 10 BTSC time. Sam Takacs finished 6th in her swim at finals.
Lucian Vilchez sped to his second Club record (15-17 year old and open) performance of the night in the 50M freestyle while earning the bronze medal in a time of 23.38. His morning swim of 23.40 had broken the Club record that he set a few weeks earlier. Avah-Skye Miller also nabbed a bronze medal in her 50M free final for 13-14 year olds. Her time was the second fastest for this age group in BTSC history. Blayke Taylor followed closely in 4th place with the third fastest time in BTSC history. Clara Vilchez and Kenzie Sparrow were also in this final placing 6th and 9th. Sam Brundage, Ameliya Suleimanov, Noemi Blake, Nikita Manziy and Daniel Eperjessy were B finalists.
The second fastest 13-14 year old 200m butterfly time in BTSC history earned Blayke Taylor a 5th place result. Bridget Robinson was also a 5th place finisher in her age group. Tyler Millar placed 8th in his race. Maggie Taylor, Phoenix Pak, Nathan Orava and Finn Taylor qualified for the B finals. In the preliminary swimming, Lily Oliver finished her race 49 seconds faster than her seed time.
Swimming for the day ended with 200m IM races where Evan Beatty and Noemi Blake placed 8th and 10th. Marissa Battrick and Kaelyn Vroom won their B final races. Emma Vaughan, Molly Robinson, Edwin Huang, Will McConachie, Griff Seguin, Nathan Vaughan, and Tyler Millar also earned spots in the B finals.
Racing on Sunday
Alessa Darby broke the provincial para s6 classification 200M freestyle record with a time of 3:17.35. It was broken again by another swimmer in a subsequent heat.
Sunday morning’s schedule included 800M and 1500M freestyle events.
Marrissa Battrick and Blayke Taylor outpaced the rest of the 13-14 year old competition to get the 1500M freestyle gold and silver medals. Marrisa’s time was a BTSC historical top 10. Maggie Taylor placed 7th. For the boys races, Griff Seguin won the gold medal while Evan Beatty and Tate Devroom placed 4th in their age groups. Rydaar Watt finished in 5th. Tate and Rydaar had finish times 53 and 45 seconds faster than their seed times.
In the 800m, Emma Vaughan went 22 seconds quicker than her seed time to finish 6th. Lucian Vilchez earned the bronze medal in his race while Evan Beatty placed 8th. Nathan Orava had a 49 second time improvement.
The younger swimmers dove into the pool in the afternoon session. Sophie Bowen and Oscar Round won 200m freestyle bronze medals while Esther Kim and William Rupay placed 4th in their races. Emma Beland had a great swim, dropping 11 seconds from her entry time.
Alexa Mackie is the bronze medallist for girls 11-12 year old 100M breaststroke using a best time that also cracked the BTSC historical top 10 times. Of note, Olivia Bowen dropped 9 seconds off of her entry time.
50M backstroke races saw Dylan Jackson speed to a silver medal. Oscar Round took 4th place in his race.
Oscar was the 6th place finisher in the 100m butterfly. Andia Hakimian and Eva Beaudry had great swims, finishing their races 16 and 6 seconds faster than their seed times.
The last event of the weekend for the younger swimmers was 800M freestyle. Amylee Courchesne finished in 9th place and Finn Harrison had a 18 second best time.
The finals session for the older age groups wrapped up the weekend of swimming.
Lucian Vilchez claimed the 200M freestyle silver medal. Evan Beatty finished 8th overall and Griff Seguin qualified for the B final. Blayke Taylor, Marrissa Battrick and Kenzie Sparrow all cracked the top 10 by placing 4th, 5th and 8th for 13-14 year old girls. Ameliya Suleimanov finished 6th in her age category while Sam Brundage and Sam Takacs were B finalists.
100m breaststroke finals saw Sam Brundage take 5th spot while Kaelyn Vroom qualified for and won her B final race. Noemi Blake also earned the extra swim in the B final. Nikita Manziy clocked the 2nd fastest time in BTSC history to earn 6th place in the 13-14 year old boys race. Daniel Eperjessy and Finn Taylor qualified for B final swims.
Clara Vilchez broke the Club record in her preliminary 50M backstroke swim and then rebroke it again in finals with a time of 29.92 on her way to earning the silver medal. Her time also achieved the Canadian Open standard for that event. Ameliya Suleimanov and Kaelyn Vroom finished 8th and 10th overall in their race while Avah-Skye Miller was a B final qualifier. Lucian Vilchez grabbed the bronze medal on the back of the 3rd fastest time in BTSC history. Daniel Eperjessy and Nathan Vaughan finished in 7th and 8th places.
The 4th fastest time in BTSC history propelled Blayke Taylor to the 13-14 year old 100M butterfly bronze medal. Clara Vilchez placed 10th in that race. Noemi Blake was 9th in her final and Kenzie Sparrow and Bridget Robinson qualified for B final races. Tate Devroom and Tyler Millar were 8th place finishers in their respective age groups. Edwin Huang and Will McConachie qualified for B finals.
The following swimmers achieved race times that were better than their entry times for all of their events.
