Canada Games 2025 Highlights
Canada Games 2025 Highlights
The 2025 Canada Games were hosted in St. John’s, Newfoundland with the swimming competition taking place Aug.10-14. Congratulations to BTSC swimmers Kaia Hornby, Kate Smith and Lucian Vilchez who were selected to Team Ontario after an extensive evaluation process. They were part of a team of 34 swimmers representing our province at the games, and competing against teams from the other provinces and territories. Here are some highlights from the competition.
On the first day of competition, Kate and Kaia were in the pool. Kaia was part of the gold medal winning 4x200M freestyle relay team. Kate placed 6th in the combined 200/400M freestyle event. She had the fastest 200m time. Kate and Kaia helped propel Team Ontario to the team points lead after the first day of competition, followed closely by Team Quebec and then Team British Columbia.
All 3 BTSC swimmers were in action on the second day of competition. Kate qualified for the final in the 100m freestyle and finished 7th in that race. Lucian swam the 200M backstroke and finished 4th overall in the preliminary race while Kaia was 13th in the 50M freestyle preliminary races. The Canada Games competition rules are unique in that the number of swimmers per province/territory are restricted for the finals races, and therefore Lucian and Kaia did not swim in the finals. Kaia was part of the mixed 4x100M medley relay team that claimed a gold medal along with the BC team who finished in an identical time. At the end of the second day, Team Ontario was still leading the standings followed by Team British Columbia in 2nd and Team Quebec in 3rd.
Kaia raced to the 100m butterfly gold medal on the third day of swimming. Lucian was 4th in the 50M backstroke setting a new Club record with a time of 27.21. Lucian also had an excellent 100M butterfly swim, setting a best time and breaking the one minute barrier. Kate finished 7th overall in the combined 50M/100M backstroke and 6th overall in the combined 50M/100m butterfly para events. After day 3, Team Ontario continued to lead, followed by Team Quebec and Team British Columbia.
The 4th day of competition saw Kate finish 8th in the 100M breaststroke. Kaia was 6th and 12th in the preliminary 200M butterfly and 200M freestyle preliminary races, respectively. Kaia was also part of the medley relay team that finished 4th. Lucian was 8th in his preliminary 100M backstroke race. The team standings after day 4 had Team Ontario on top followed closely by Team Quebec and then Team British Columbia.
The last day of the indoor competition had Kate and Lician qualifying for finals. Kate earned an extra swim in the combined para 150/200M IM event, while Lucian was also finals bound for 200M IM. Kate finished 7th overall in her race and Lucian was 6th in his final race.
Congratulations to Kaia, Kate and Lucian for being part of the Canada Games Team Ontario winning team and for their individual accomplishments at the competition.
