Speedo Canadian Short Course Championships 2025 Highlights

The Barrie Trojan Swim Club had six athletes competing at the Speedo Canadian Short Course Championships held in Sherbrooke, QC from August 7th to 10th.  There were 104 clubs represented at these inaugural championships.

On the first day of swimming, Katrina Bellio raced to the 200M freestyle silver medal. Her finals time broke the 2 minute barrier. Laila Oravsky finished 4th in the 1500M freestyle. Sydney Colquhoun and Ben Millar qualified for the 200M butterfly B finals. Sydney won her B final race and Ben finished 5th in his. Alessa Darby broke the Ontario para record for the 100m backstroke in the S6 category. Her record was broken again by a fellow competitor in a subsequent heat. Griff Seguin had a 17 second improvement over his entry time in the 800M freestyle. 

Highlights from Day 2 of swimming were led by Laila Oravsky winning the 400M IM silver medal. Alessa Darby placed 7th in her 100M freestyle, dropping 6 seconds throughout the day from her preliminary entry time. Katrina Bellio placed 3rd in her 100m freestyle B final. Ben Millar was 5th in his 400M IM B final race.

On the third day, Alessa Darby set a new Ontario provincial record in 400M freestyle S6 classification with a time of 7:02.68 in her preliminary race. That time was a 27 second improvement over her seed time. In the final, Alessa rebroke the record, setting a new standard time of 7:02.01 and earning the bronze medal. Katrina Bellio also earned a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle. Laila Oravsky finished 7th overall in this event. Laila also qualified for the 50M breaststroke B final where she came in 2nd. Sydney Colquhoun qualified for the 100m butterfly B and placed 7th. 

On the last day of swimming, Laila Oravsky won a bronze medal in the 200M breaststroke. Her time of 2:31.38 is a new Club open record, eclipsing her preliminary race time of 2:33.21, which was also a Club record. Alessa Darby had a 1.5 second best time in her 50M freestyle race. Griff Seguin took 11 seconds off of his 1500M freestyle entry time.
