MAC Summer Invitational 2025 Highlights

Twenty seven BTSC swimmers were at the Markham Pan Am Centre July 24 - 27 to race in the MAC Summer Invitational hosted by the Markham Aquatic Club. There were 26 clubs competing at the meet. Here are the BTSC highlights:

Friday Sessions

The first event of the day was timed finals for the 400M freestyle. Ameliya Suleimanov placed 8th while Sam Brundage and Rydaar Watt finished 9th in their age groups. Rydaar had a 5 second personal best time. Edwin Huang had an excellent swim, dropping 8 seconds from his entry time. 

In the 200M IM preliminary racing, Kenzie Sparrow, Blayke Taylor, and Eva Mankarios qualified for the 13-14 year old A final. Emma Vaughan earned a spot in the B final. For the older girls, Taira Vroom and Avery Knight claimed lanes in the A final. In the boys preliminary races, Scotty Sutton, Griff Seguin and Tyler Millar raced to A final spots while Rydaar Watt and Nathan Vaughan qualified for B final swims. At finals, Blayke and Taira both climbed to the top of the podium for their age groups. Avery was 5th and Eva placed 9th. Griff, Scotty and Tyler were 5th, 7th and 8th in their A final. Rydaar finished 1st and Emma placed 2nd in their B finals races. 

50M freestyle racing saw Ben Millar, Kenzie Sparrow, Blayke Taylor and Taira Vroom qualify for the A finals. Marissa Battrick and Edwin Huang were B finalists and Kaelyn Vroom had a notable preliminary swim, breaking the 30 second barrier with a new personal best time. Blayke earned another medal by finishing 2nd in her final. Kenzie finished 4th, Ben placed 5th and Taira was 7th. Marissa placed 3rd in her B final. Of note, Edwin dropped more time in his final race so that his new best time was almost a full second faster than his preliminaries entry time. 

Marissa Battrick, Emma Vaughan, Taira Vroom, Kaelyn Vroom, Tate Devroom, Evan Beatty and Nathan Vaughan earned lanes in the A finals for 100m backstroke. Sam Brundage, Tyler Millar and Griff Seguin qualified for the B finals. Taira was the silver medallist based on her finals race. Evan and Marissa placed 4th in their races while Tate and Kaelyn finished 9th overall and Nathan was 10th.

The finals session started with the fastest heat of 1500M freestyle, capping off the event which started the previous day. Tate Devroom and Laila Oravsky both touched the wall first to earn gold medals. Scotty Sutton won the silver medal in his race.

In the afternoon session for 12 year old and under swimmers, Avah-Skye Miller touched the wall 41 seconds ahead of her entry time to claim the gold medal in 400M freestyle. Her teammate, Madeleine Devroom also swam a best time to earn the bronze medal.  Nathan Orava placed 7th overall in his race.

Madeleine Devroom had another best time in 200M IM to finish in 8th place.

Avah-Skye won another gold medal in the 50M freestyle while her teammate, Eva Beaudry placed 6th.

Saturday Sessions

The 12 year old and under session began for BTSC with Sophie Bowen swimming a 18 second best time to place 6th in the 400M IM.

Avah-Skye Miller used a best time to win the 100M butterfly silver medal. Madeleine Devroom had a 5 second personal best time to finish in 6th place. After swimming 400M IM, Sophie Bowen was still able to drop 4 seconds off of her 100M butterfly swim.

Madeleine Devroom placed 7th in her 200M freestyle race and Sophie Bowen had another best time, this time by 5 seconds in the 100M breaststroke.

The preliminary session for the older age groups started with 400M IM timed finals where Katrina Bellio and Avery Knight were the silver and bronze medallists. Rydaar Watt placed 6th overall in his race, establishing a 9 second personal best time.

Girls 50M backstroke races saw three BTSC swimmers qualify for the A final. Taira Vroom, Avery Knight and Ameliya Suleimanov earned the right to swim in the evening session. For the boys, Tate Devroom, Edwin Huang and Ben Millar accomplished the same feat.

Kenzie Sparrow and Eva Mankarios qualified for the 100M butterfly A final while Kaelyn Vroom and Griff Seguin were B finalists.

In the girls 200M freestyle prelims, Kenzie Sparrow earned another A final appearance, as did Taira Vroom. Ameliya Suleimanov qualified for the B final race. The boys race saw Lucian Vilchez get through to the A final.

Eva Mankarios and Taira Vroom claimed A final entries for the 100M breaststroke. Scotty Sutton did the same while Rydaar Watt, Griff Seguin and Nathan Vaughan all qualified for the B final.

The finals session started with the fastest heat of 800M freestyle, capping off the event that started on Thursday afternoon. Avah-Skye Miller used a 24 second personal best to reach the finish in the bronze medal position for 11-12 year olds. Blayke Taylor and Katrina Bellio were also bronze medal winners in the 13-14 year old and 15 year old and over age groups. Nathan Orava and Rydaar Watt were both 6th place finishers in their age groups. Notably, Rydaar’s finish time was a 17 second improvement over his entry time.

Taira Vroom and Avery Knight reached the 50M backstroke podium, winning the silver and bronze medals. Ameliya Suleimanov finished in 7th. For the boys finals, Ben Millar, Edwin Huang and Tate Devroom raced to 5th, 6th and 7th place results.

In the 100M butterfly finals, Kenzie Sparrow and Eva Mankarios finished in 6th and 9th place. Kaelyn Vroom and Griff Seguin came 3rd in their B final races.

Kenzie Sparrow and Ameliya Suleimanov placed 5th and 8th in their respective 200m freestyle finals. Scotty Sutton finished 5th in his finals race. Tyler Millar was 3rd in his B final swim.

Taira Vroom had a 5th place result in the 100M breaststroke final while Eva Mankarioe finished 8th. Scotty Sutton was 6th in his final.

Sunday Sessions

Avah-Skye Miller kicked off the BTSC highlights in the afternoon session for the younger swimmers with a gold medal swim in the 50M butterfly. Her time was a best time and broke through the 30 second barrier.

Avah-Skye added to her medal haul by winning the 100m freestyle event to earn another gold medal. 

In the 50M breaststroke, Nathan Orava placed 6th.

Sophie Bowen used a 34 second best time to race to the wall first and claim the 200m butterfly gold medal.

For the older age group swimmers, the first event of the preliminary session was 200M backstroke. Marissa Battrick, Blayke Taylor, Taira Vroom and Evan Beatty earned entries into the A final. Emma Vaughan and Griff Seguin qualified for the B final. 

The 50M girls butterfly races saw a number of BTSC swimmers qualify for the final. Blayke Taylor, Kenzie Sparrow, Sam Brundage, Avery Knight, Taira Vroom and Katrina Bellio all earned places in the finals session. On the boys side, Edwin Huang and Ben Millar were finals qualifiers.

The 200M breaststroke preliminary event saw Eva Mankarios, Marissa Battrick, Rydaar Watt, Scotty Sutton, Griff Seguin and Nathan Vaughan make it through to the A final.  

Kenzie Sparrow, Blayke Taylor and Katrina Bellio were 100m freestyle A final qualifiers. Sam Brundage, Emma Vaughan, Avery Knight and Ameliya Suleimanov earned an extra swim in the B final. 

Sam Brundage led the 13-14 year old 50M breaststroke field in the preliminary qualifier race. Taira Vroom also qualified for the final. Avery Knight bettered her entry time by almost 4 seconds in her swim. Tyler Millar had a 8 second best time. 

Rydaar Watt, Scotty Sutton and Tyler Millar qualified for the A final in 200M butterfly.

In the 200m backstroke finals, Taira Vroom raced to the gold medal while Marissa Battrick swam to the bronze medal position on the podium. Blayke Taylor finished in 9th and Emma Vaughan was 3rd in her B final. Evan Beatty and Griff Seguin placed 4th and 8th respectively in their A final race.

Blayke Taylor was on the top of the podium for the 50M butterfly for the 13-14 year old age group. Kenzie Sparrow and Sam Brundage finished 4th and 9th in the race. 

Avery Knight and Taira Vroom finished in the gold and silver medal positions in their race. Avery’s time of 28.35 set a new Club record and Taira’s time of 28.38 also beat the previous Club record. Edwin Huang had an excellent race in his final, setting a new personal best and placing 9th. Ben Millar also had a personal best to finish in 9th in his race.

Nathan Vaughan, Rydaar Watt and Marissa Battrick came in 4th, 5th and 7th in their respective 200M breaststroke final races.

Kenzie Sparrow and Blayke Taylor came 4th and 5th in the 100m freestyle. Avery Knight won her B final race. Edwin Huang swam in the B final and had an excellent race, setting a new personal standard 1 second faster than his preliminary entry time. 

Sam Brundage and Taira Vroom were 50M breaststroke medallists claiming the gold and bronze in their respective races. 

The 200M butterfly finals saw Rydaar Watt use a 6 second best time to finish 4th and Tyler Millar place 6th.
