Ontario Swimming Championships 2025 Highlights

Barrie Trojan athletes were racing through the TPASC water July 9-13 at the Ontario Swimming Championships for 2025. BTSC had 44 competitors who achieved the high qualifying standards required to earn entry into the meet. Our team was one of 92 Clubs representing all parts of the province competing at the event.

The meet format consisted of open age categories with traditional preliminary and finals sessions and youth age groups with timed finals. Here are the many BTSC highlights from five days of swimming at OSC 2025.

Day1

Laila Oravsky raced to a gold medal and was crowned the 2025 provincial champion in the 1500M freestyle.

Kaia Hornby established a new 1500M freestyle Club record time of 17.50.09 resulting in her being the provincial silver medallist in her age group. 

Griff Seguin won the 15-16 year old 1500M free bronze medal and finished in 9th place overall.

Shea Gillespie finished 8th overall in the 1500m free. Harper Ferguson and Emma Vaughan had excellent 1500M free swims, taking 8 and 10 seconds off respectively from their previous best times. Rydaar Watt had an impressive 800M swim, setting a 17 second new personal best.

In the women’s 200M IM preliminary races, Taira Vroom and Avery Knight qualified for the A finals while Kenzie Sparrow and Marissa Battrick earned extra swims in the B final. For the men, Griff Seguin, Will McConachie, Ben Millar and Lucian Vilchez swam to places in the B finals.

In those finals races, Taira raced to a bronze medal and Avery placed 6th overall. Marissa Battrick and Kenzie Sparrow finished 1st and 2nd in their B finals race. Will McConachie had an impressive 4 second best time from his preliminary seed time to finish 2nd in the B final.

In the para 400M free, Alessa Darby had a huge personal best time of 46 seconds and swam 5 seconds faster again in the finals session to claim the silver medal. Kate Smith qualified for the final in the para 200M free where she finished 4th.

In women’s 100M backstroke racing, Avery Knight claimed a spot in the A final while Clara Vilchez, Kaia Hornby and Ameliya Suleimanov were B finalists. On the men’s side, Lucian Vilchez also qualified for the B final.

Avery finished 4th overall while Clara came 2nd in her B final race. Lucian won his B final.

Day 2

The 2nd day of OSC 2025 saw the first full youth session take place.

Sam Brundage was the provincial champion in the 100M breaststroke. Sam raced to the finish ahead of 27 other competitors to claim the highest step on the podium.

In the 200M IM races, Sam climbed one seed position to finish 4th. Kennedy Jackson finished 6th overall in her race. 

Avah-Skye Miller and Eva Beaudry placed 8th and 9th in their respective age groups for the 100M freestyle. William Rupay had an excellent 100M free race, going over 2 seconds faster than his seed time and climbing 15 places in the final results.

Kennedy Jackson, Eva Beaudry and Madeleine Devroom finished 4th, 6th and 7th in the 800M freestyle.

The girls 4x50M freestyle relay team came in 4th place.

In the preliminary session for the older swimmers, Kaia Hornby and Marissa Battrick qualified for the 13-14 year old 200M free A final. Kenzie Sparrow earned an evening swim in the B final. Taira Vroom and Laila Oravsky raced to qualifying spots in the A final for the 17 and over age group. Griff Seguin and Lucian Vilchez qualified for B finals in the men’s races.

In the finals, Kaia Hornby raced to the gold medal in a Club record time of 2:06.73. Marissa finished in 7th. Taira and Laila placed 6th and 7th in the A final race for their age group.

Kate Smith and Alessa Darby used their para 200M IM preliminary races to set up for the finals session. Kate won the bronze medal in that final race.

In the 100M breaststroke, Adriana Martone raced to earn a lane in the A final where she finished in 7th place. 

Blayke Taylor, Clara Vilchez, Avery Knight and Taira Vroom qualified for the 100M butterfly A finals. Blayke finished 5th and Clara 9th. Avery won the bronze medal, beating her previous Club record time, to post a new Club benchmark of 1:02.21. Taira finished 8th overall. Tyler and Ben Millar were B finalists from the men’s preliminary races.

The girls 4x100M freestyle relay team of Marissa Battrick, Kenzie Sparrow, Keira Hornby and Kaia Hornby claimed a silver medal while breaking the Club record with a time of 4:05.56. The women's team placed 4th in their race.

Day 3

The morning preliminary session saw Avery Knight, Evan Beatty and Lucian Vilchez qualify for 200M backstroke A finals. Marissa Battrick, Clara Vilchez, and Sam Takacs were B finals qualifiers.

Alessa Darby earned a spot in the 100M backstroke para final and posted a 5 second personal best time.

For 400M IM, Kaia Hornby, Marissa Battrick, Kaelyn Vroom, Laila Oravsky and Taira Vroom all qualified to swim in the event at finals. Of note, Blayke Taylor had an excellent swim, posting a time 10 seconds quicker than her seed time. Will McConaachie used a 7 second best time to qualify for A finals alongside his teammate Griff Seguin.

Kate Smith swam 100M para butterfly and earned another swim in the final.

The afternoon youth session began with the 100M butterfly where Avah-Syke Miller raced to a 6th place finish using a best time to jump 5 seed positions. 

Kennedy Jackson broke the 5 minute barrier in her 400M freestyle on her way to claiming the 11 year old bronze medal. Eva Beaudry and Sophie Bowen had great races, taking 9 and 8 seconds respectively off their previous bests. Eva finished in 8th place. William Rupay had a 6 second faster swim than his seed time in his race.

Avah-Skye Miller is the provincial silver medallist in the 12 year old 50M freestyle. She had a personal best time. Sam Brundage finished 7th in her race.

Kennedy Jackson and Sam Brundage finished 4th and 6th in their respective 400M IM races.

The girls 4x100M freestyle team of Kennedy Jackson, Eva Beaudry, Avah-Skye Miller and Sam Brundage, the 7th seed, swam an amazing relay to earn the bronze medal. Their time of 4:23.50 is a new Club record. 

The evening finals session was highlighted by gold medal swims from Avery Knight in 200M backstroke and Taira Vroom in 400M IM. Avery set a new Club record with a time of 2:15.17. 

In other 200M backstroke finals races, Clara Vilchez won her B final. Evan Beatty and Lucian Vilchez both placed 4th in their A finals races.

Kate Smith won the silver medal in her 100M butterfly event and Alessa Darby placed 4th in her 100M backstroke race.

Kaia Hornby claimed the silver medal in her 400M IM final while Marissa Battrick paced 7th.  Laila Oravsky earned a bronze medal for her age group and Kaelyn Vroom touched the wall in 5th place for her race.

The women's and men's 4x200M relay teams placed 7th and 8th respectively.

Day 4

This was the last day of the youth competition. BTSC swimmers had more amazing races in this afternoon session.

Kennedy Jackson started the session with a 4th place finish in the 200M freestyle. Sam Brundage came in 9th and Eva Beaudry 10th in their races. Sophie Bowen had an excellent swim, getting to the end 3 seconds faster than her seed time. William Rupay also had a great swim, setting a new personal standard 4 seconds quicker than before his race.

Madeleine Devroom and Kennedy Jackson had 10 and 8 second personal best times respectively to finish 4th and 5th in the 200M butterfly.

Avah-Skye Miller was 10th in her 100M backstroke, earning scoring points for the team.

Sam Brundage used a best time to race to the 200M breaststroke silver medal. 

The girls 4x50M medley relay team of Kennedy Jackson, Avah-Skye Miller, Sam Brundage and Eva Beaudry bettered their seed time and jumped 2 seeding placements to claim the bronze medal.

Here are more BTSC highlights from the older swimmer’s sessions.

400M freestyle saw more BTSC finals qualifiers with Kaia Hornby, Marissa Battrick, Laila Oravsky and Griff Seguin all earning A final swims in the evening session. Kaia was crowned provincial champion after the finals race. She was joined by Marissa on the podium who won the silver medal. Laila also raced to the podium, reaching the end of the race in the bronze medal position. Griff finished in 9th place.

Kate Smith and Alessa Darby swam in the para 100M freestyle preliminary race ahead of another chance in the finals session where they finished in 4th and 6th place.

In the 200M breaststroke, Adriana Martone qualified for the A final and Kaelyn Vroom was a B finalist. Adriana placed 8th overall in the finals race. 

Clara Vilchez and Kenzie Sparrow earned swims in the evening session by qualifying for the 50M freestyle B final.

In the last event of the day, the women’s 4x100M medley relay team placed 4th while the girl’s team was 6th.

Day 5

Kate Smith and Alessa Darby started the session for BTSC by earning spots in the para 100M breaststroke finals and later accomplished the same for 50M freestyle.. 

Blayke Taylor had an awesome 7 second best time in the 200M butterfly to qualify for A finals. Laila Oravsky and Avery Knight also qualified to represent BTSC in the A finals. Keira Hornby and Clara Vilchez swam to places in the B final. In the boy’s races, Tyler Millar, Will McConachie and Scotty Sutton qualified for the A finals races. Tyler and Will used significant personal bests to climb up the seeding placements. Ben Millar qualified for the B final and Tate Devroom and Edwin Huang had excellent races, establishing new personal best times. 

Kaia Hornby and Kenzie Sparrow raced to claim A finals spots in the 100M freestyle. 

In the finals racing, Laila Oravsky was crowned the provincial 800M freestyle champion. Marissa Battrick and Taira Vroom claimed silver and bronze medals for their age groups. Scotty Sutton placed 9th in his race and Evan Beatty had a great swim, dropping almost 30 seconds off of his seed time. 

In the 100M para breaststroke final, Kate Smith finished 4th and Alessa Darby was 6th.

Avery Knight won the 200M butterfly silver medal. Blayke Taylor finished 4th in her final and Laila Oravsky placed 5th. Clara Vilchez won her B final race. Will McConachie, Tyler Millar and Scotty Sutton finished 8th, 9th and 10th respectively in their A finals races.  

Kate Smith made it to the wall after 50M of freestyle in the bronze medal position. Alessa Darby was 4th in the race.

Kaia Hornby’s 100M freestyle time of 59.49 established a new Club record, earning a 5th place in the final. Kenzie Sparrow finished 10th overall.

After 5 days of racing, as a team, BTSC placed 5th overall in the standings for team scores. BTSC won 28 medals (7 gold, 9 silver, 12 bronze) which was the 5th highest medal count. A number of BTSC swimmers earned places in the top 10 high points standings:
