Bell Canadian Swimming Trials 2025 Highlights
The Barrie Trojans were in Victoria, BC from June 7-12 participating in the Bell Canadian Swimming Trials. Swimming took place at the beautiful Saanich Commonwealth Place facility. BTSC was represented by 12 athletes who achieved the qualifying standards and earned the right to swim against the best swimmers in Canada.

***Jordi Vilchez won 3 silver medals and earned a spot on the Canadian Senior National Team headed to the World Championships in Singapore from July 26 - August 3.***
Day 1
Lots of BTSC highlights on the first day of competition.
Jordi Vilchez is the 2025 Canadian Trials silver medallist in the 400M freestyle. His time of 3:49.63 is a new Club open record and was a 4 second improvement over his seed time. Congratulations Jordi on a fantastic achievement!
Avery Knight qualified for the 100M backstroke junior final where she raced to 5th place.
Griff Seguin swam a personal best time in his 400M freestyle race where he was the youngest competitor in the field.
A number of BTSC swimmers were able to swim in time trials. Lucian Vilchez had a best time in his 100M backstroke time trial. Lucian swam to a personal best in the prelim which resulted in a tie for an alternate position. At the end of the prelim session, Lucian won his swim-off with another personal best effort. Clara Vilchez and Sam Brundage were able to get their first in-pool experience at a Trials event in the 100M backstroke and 200M breaststroke respectively. Sam was the youngest competitor in the breaststroke races.
Laila Oravsky swam in the same preliminary heat as Summer Macintosh in the 400M freestyle. What an experience! It is the event that later that day, Summer Macintosh broke the world record.
Day 2
Kaia Hornby qualified for the junior 100M butterfly final by using a new Club record time of 1:02.92. She bettered that record in the final, racing to a time of 1:02.59.
Laila Oravsky placed 8th overall in the 800M freestyle which also earned her the bronze medal in the junior rankings.
Day 3
Taira Voom qualified for and swam in the 200M individual medley B final.
Several swimmers were able to participate again in time trials. Kaia Hornby bettered the 50M freestyle Club record last set in 2006 by speeding to a time of 27.77. Sydney Colquhoun set a new personal best time in her 50M free time trial swim. Ben Millar also established a new personal best in his race.
Day 4
Jordi Vilchez qualified for the final in 200M butterfly. Ben Millar and Scotty Sutton raced to best times in their swims.
In the women’s 200M butterfly, Laila Oravsky and Kaia Hornby qualified for the junior and B finals, respectively.
Jordi sped to his 2nd silver medal at Canadian Trials in a Club open record time of 1:58.51.
Kaia also had an awesome race, finishing 3rd in the B final while establishing a new 13-14 Club record time of 2:17.87, tying the Open BTSC record in the event held by Laila Oravsky.
Day 5
Taira Vroom and Laila Oravsky qualified for the 400M individual medley junior final where they finished 7th and 12th overall in the junior rankings.
In the 200M Backstroke races, Lucian Vilchez used a personal best time to qualify for the junior final. Avery Knight also qualified for the junior final with a time that matched her Club record seed time.
Avery established a new Club record time of 2:15.62 to finish 5th overall in the junior rankings which also met the world junior time standard for this event. Lucian placed 10th overall in the junior rankings.
Scotty Sutton swam to a 8 second best time in the 800M freestyle time trial.
Day 6
Jordi Vilchez claimed his third Canadian Trials silver medal in the 200 freestyle with a Club open record time of 1:48.83.
1500M freestyle racing saw Laila Oravsky and Taira Vroom finish 5th and 8th in the junior rankings respectively and 8th and 11th overall.
