BTSC Spring Off the Blocks 2025 Ontario Meet Highlights

BTSC hosted our last meet for the 2024/2025 swim season on May 3 - 4, 2025. Spring Off the Blocks was a great success with 6 clubs participating. We welcomed Mississauga Aquatic Club, Newmarket Stingrays Swim Club, Peterborough Swim Club, Variety Village Aquatic Club and Whitby Swimming to the East Bayfield Community Centre for a great weekend of competition. Over 400 swimmers participated in the racing.

Here are some of the highlights from the weekend starting with the Saturday sessions.

The boys relay teams won the 4x50M freestyle relay gold and bronze while the girls teams won silver and bronze medals. The boys teams were Nathan Douglas, Thomas Gangi, Dylan George, and Finn Taylor and Anton Chaikouski, Namiid Khan, Nikita Manziy and Owen Oatway. The girls teams were Tori Carlesimo, Dorothy Dong, Jordyn Gardner, and Sarah Hankin, and Harper Ferguson, Emmy Hankin, Kylie Sarabura, and Lilli Wilford.

10 and Under Age Group

Chase Turner earned gold medals in 50M back and 100M fly. He was the bronze medallist in the 100M free.

Dylan Jackson was also a multi-medallist with gold in 200M back and bronze in 100M IM. 

Emma Mackie’s 100M free time was good for the silver medal and she claimed bronze medals in 200M breast and 200M back.

Esther Kim won a silver medal for her 100M IM race and a bronze for 100M fly.

Callum Round was the 200M breast silver medal winner. Oscar Round earned a bronze medal in 50M back.

Kenzie Marshall won two bronze medals; one each for 100M free and 100M IM.

Sarah Leahy got to the finish 3rd fastest in 200m breast to grab the bronze medal.

The girls relay team of Emma Beland, Esther Kim, Emma Mackie and Kenzie Marshall raced to a gold medal 4x50M freestyle finish. Their best time let them leapfrog the first seed to claim the top spot. The boys relay team of Raman Chaikouski, Boyd Miller, Oscar Round, and Chase Turner earned the silver medal.

11-12 Year Old Age Group

Eva Beaudry started the evening session off with a gold medal in 100M free for 11 year olds. Kennedy Jackson touched second in 100M free to earn a silver medal.

Blayke Taylor climbed to the highest spot on the podium to earn a 12 year old gold medal in 100M free. Avah-Skye Miller was the silver medallist and Alexa Mackie claimed bronze.  For the boys, William Rupay was fastest, earning a gold medal.

In the 50M backstroke, Eva Beaudry was again perched in the gold medal spot on the podium. Avah-Skye Miller accomplished the same feat for her age group and Vladislava Shneider was the silver medal winner. Griffin Williams won a bronze medal in the boys 11 year old race while Rydaar Watt earned the top gold medal spot for his age group.

Nathan Orava was the fastest 200M 12 year old breastroker to get the gold. Sam Brundage did the same for the girls race followed by Blayke Taylor in silver medal position.

Kennedy Jackson, Madeleine Devroom and Eva Beaudry all clocked major time improvements to sweep the 11 year old 100M butterfly podium. In the 12 year old race, there was another podium sweep using all best times by Blayke Taylor, Raevyn Maule and Alexa Mackie. Not to be outdone, the 12 year old boys also had a podium sweep leveraging all best times by Rydaar Watt, Nathan Orava and Ben DePiero.

Brynn Oatway and Julianna Palermo were the 12 year old gold and bronze medallists in the 50M breaststroke. The 11 year old race saw Madeleine Devroom claim the silver medal. A gold medal was placed around the neck of William Rupay for the boys 50M race.

Nathan Orava and Rydaar Watt finished in the gold and silver 200M backstroke placements. Kennedy Jackson and Raevyn Maule were gold medallists for the respective age groups in this event. Sam Brundage won a bronze medal.

In the girls 12 year old 100M individual medley, Avah-Skye Miller earned gold, followed by her teammate, Alexa Mackie, in the silver medal position. Madeleine Devroom and Sophie Bowen were the 11 year old silver and bronze medallists. Reicher Santoso claimed the bronze medal in the 12 year old boys race.

BTSC relay teams took the girls 4x50M freestyle gold and silver medals. Those teams were Sam Brundage, Alexa Mackie, Avah-Skye Miller, and Blayke Taylor, and Madeleine Devroom, Kennedy Jackson, Raevyn Maule, and Leigh Sugden. The boys team of Ben DePiero, Nathan Orava, William Rupay, and Rydaar Watt were also gold medallists.

In the Sunday sessions, BTSC athletes had more excellent races leading to podium results.

The session closed with relays where BTSC teams swept the podium for both the girls and boys 4x50M medley races. The girls teams were Sarah Hankin, Kylie Sarabura, Sam Takacs, and Lilli Wilford, and Tori Carlesimo, Dorothy Dong, Jordyn Gardner, and Emmy Hankin, and Harper Ferguson, Julia Logan, Eva Mankarios and Cassidy Meeuwse. The boys teams were Tate Devroom, Nathan Douglas, Thomas Gangi, and Finn Taylor, and Dylan George, Anton Chaicouski, Owen Oatway, and Robert Palermo, and Edwin Huang, Nikita Manziy, Hayden Snell, and Matt Creasor.

10 and Under Age Group

The afternoon of racing began with a silver medal in the 9 year old 100M backstroke by Sarah Leahy. Emma Mackie was the bronze medallist in the 10 year old race. For the boys, Chase Turner got to the finish fastest to earn the gold medal.

Esther Kim won a silver medal in the 50M butterfly and Oscar Round earned a bronze medal.

Dylan Jackson, Ainsley Kiser and Sarah Leahy claimed all of the 200M freestyle podium spots for 9 year olds. Emma Mackie was the 10 year old gold medallist improving on her 3rd overall seeding. For 10 year old boys, Chase Turner, Oscar Round and Raman Chaikouski also swept the podium. Callum Round earned a bronze medal from the 9 year old races.

Chase Turner and Esther Kim were gold medal recipients for the 200M butterfly.

Oscar Round is the silver medallist in the 50M freestyle.

Dylan Jackson touched the wall in 2nd to warm the 200m IM silver medal for 9 year olds. Emma Mackie was the fastest 10 year old, winning the gold medal. For boys, Callum Round won the 9 year old bronze medal and Chase Turner is the 10 year old silver medallist.

The girls 4x50M medley relay team of Emma Beland, Dylan Jackson, Esther Kim and Emma Mackie swam to a silver medal finish while the boys team of Raman Chaikouski, Boyd Miller, Oscar Round, and  Chase Turner claimed the bronze medal.

11-12 Year Old Age Group

The last session of the meet kicked off with the 100M backstroke where Sam Brundage, Avah-Skye Miller and Leah Martin occupied all of the 12 year old podium spots using best times to accomplish the feat. Eva Beuadry won the 11 year old gold medal. For 12 year old boys, Rydaar Watt finished fastest to earn the gold while Ben DePiero claimed the bronze medal.

In the 12 year old 50M butterfly there was another podium sweep with Blayke Taylor, Avah-Skye Miller and Sam Brundage taking the top 3 spots. The race was highlighted by Blayke’s time of 29.53 sec. which is a new Club record. In the 11 year old racing, Madeleine Devroom won gold. Nathan Orava and Ben DePiero were the gold and silver medallists in their race.

Kennedy Jackson took the gold medal in 200M freestyle and her teammate, Sophie Bowen, earned the bronze medal. Blayke Taylor won another gold in the 12 year old race and Raevyn Maule claimed the bronze. William Rupay continued to have a strong meet by winning the gold medal and MJ Lee was the bronze medallist for the boys.

Alexa Mackie and Raevyn Maule finished 1 and 2 in 100M breaststroke to take home gold and silver medals.Nathan Orava used an almost 14 second best time to get to the wall first and win the gold medal. Andrew Bin was the bronze medal winner.

Rydaar Watt and Madeleine Devroom were 200m butterfly gold winners.

In the 50M freestyle sprint races, the 11 year old gold and silver medals were won by Eva Beaudry and Kennedy Jackson. For the 12 year olds, the podium was filled again with BTSC athletes Blayke Taylor, Avah-Skye Miller and Sam Brundage. William Rupay had another best time getting him to the gold medal position.

Kennedy Jackson and Eva Beaudry were the gold and bronze medallists for the 11 year old 200M individual medley. Rydaar Watt and William Rupay won gold and silver in their race.

Girls and boys BTSC 4x50M medley relay teams won gold and silver medals. The team of Raevyn Maule, Avah-Skye Miller, Sam Brundage and Blayke Taylor established a new Club record time of 2:09.01 in their gold medal performance. The silver medal team was Eva Beaudry, Kennedy Jackson, Alexa Mackie and  Leigh Sugden. The boys teams were Ben DePiero, Nathan Orava, William Rupay, and Rydaar Watt, and Andrew Bin, MJ Lee, Reicher Santoso, and Griffin Williams.

Here are some other swimming highlights from the meet.

There were a number of swimmers who posted best times in all of their races. They are Eva Beaudry, Emma Beland, Claire Bevan, Sophie Bowen, Anton Chaikouski, Tate Devroom, Jessica Enwright, Kennedy Jackson, Binaaz Kaur, Avery Lane, James Mancini, Eva Mankarios, Nikita Manziy, Leah Martin, Elena McCormack, Avak-Skye Miller, Owen Oatway, Lily Oliver, Nathan Orava, Brook Ross, Vladislava Shneider, and Maggie Taylor.

Tate Devroom won all of his individual races.

Congratulations to Sam Takacs, Maggie Taylor and Edwin Huang for achieving more Ontario Swimming Championships qualifying times. Sam did this in 100M backstroke, Maggie in 200M backstroke, 200M butterfly and 1500M freestyle, and Edwin in 100M and 200m backstroke. These swimmers have now achieved the minimum 2 required qualifying times to be eligible for OSC”s. 

Many of our pre-competitive program swimmers participated in the meet. For a lot of them this was their first swim meet experience. It was great to see so many of these swimmers participating. There were 36 swimmers from the Pre-competitive and House League groups of which 31 were swimming in their first meet. Of note, Charlotte Cloutheir swam 200 Breaststroke and took 1 minute off her time from last year. Other swimmers challenged themselves in the 100 medley, Jaxon Pryke, Archer Lee, Zion Singh and Elsa Hastings with Hannah Schoemaker and Jenny Foster in the 50 Fly. 

The final day sessions were closed with costume relays which were a load of fun. Thank you to everyone for their enthusiasm and creativity.
