ESWIM Grand Prix 2025 Meet Highlights
After a break in competitions in March for some hard training, our BTSC athletes were back in the pool racing at the ESWIM Grand Prix April 4-6, 2025 in Etobicoke. The BTSC had 77 swimmers competing against swimmers representing 17 other clubs.
Friday Sessions
Distance events were swam on Friday with lots of great BTSC swims exemplified by swimmers touching the wall faster than their seed times.
In the 800M freestyle, Kaia Hornby established a new Club record time of 9:20.49, finishing 2nd overall for all swimmers regardless of age and 1st for swimmers her age. Kaia’s time was also a Canadian Trials qualifying time. Keira Hornby and Julia Denes placed 6th and 7th overall and 2nd and 6th for their age group. Emma Vaughan finished 3rd fastest for 13 year olds. Sophie Bowen, Vladislava Shneider and Leigh Sugden all took time off. For the boys, Tyler Millar used a 32 second time improvement to finish 3rd overall. Finn Taylor, Robert Palermo, and Owen Oatway also bettered their seed times by 22 sec., 18 sec., and 1min 16sec , respectively.
In the 1500M races, Shea Gillespie swam to a 1st place overall while Blayke Taylor took advantage of a 45 second time improvement to place 2nd. Maggie McConachie also had a big time improvement of 36 seconds to finish 10th overall. In the boys race, Will McConachie and Nathan Vaughan dropped significant time of 1min28sec and 50 seconds respectively to finish 5th and 6th overall. Tate Devroom also had an awesome swim placing 7th, and was the fastest 13 year old by dropping 54 seconds. Edwin Huang and Namid Khan also posted best times so that every BTSC swimmer in this event raced to a faster time.
The evening session started with the 200M IM where Lucien Vilchez jumped 7 seeding places to finish 2nd overall. Ben Millar was 3rd and Scotty Sutton finished 5th. Of note, Hayden Snell, Namid Khan and Tyler Millar had finish times that were 24, 16 and 12 seconds faster than their seed times, respectively. For the girls, Kaia Hornby finished 4th overall and was the fastest 13 year old. Molly Robinson finished 17 seconds earlier than her seed time and Maggie Taylor shaved 7 seconds off her time.
In the 50M breaststroke, Kylie Sarabura touched the wall in 1st place overall. Her teammates, Lilli Wilford, Noemi Blake and Reilynn Oevering all finished in the top 10 overall. Gracelyn Oevering dropped 4 seconds from her seed time in a great swim. Scotty Sutton set a new best time to finish 4th overall. Will McConachie also had a best time to be the fastest 14 year old in the race. Other notable swims included Matt Creasor’s 19 second best time and Nathan Vaughan’s 14 second improvement.
In the 50M backstroke, Avery Knight placed 4th overall and Julia Denes finished in 10th. Ben Millar swam 2 seconds faster and claimed 2nd overall. Nathan Vaughan also had an excellent swim to finish 5th overall. Will McConachie used a 5 second best time to finish as the fastest 14 year old. Griff Seguin had an 8 second time improvement.
Lucien Vilchez clocked a 24.97 50M freestyle time to place 4th overall, again jumping multiple seed positions. Other notable swims saw Cole Harrison, Finn Taylor and Tyler Miller dropping 4, 3 and 2 seconds respectively while Hayden Snell took off over a second to crack the 30 second barrier.
Avery Knight swam to a 2nd place finish overall in 50M butterfly. Kaia Hornby was the fastest 13 year old, finishing 8th overall. Eva Mankarios and Gracelyn Oevering had 4 second best times. For the boys, Ben Millar touched in 3rd overall and Scotty Sutton dropped 1.6 seconds to finish 8th. Will McConachie was the fastest 14 year old again, setting a new Club record time of 28.29. Nathan Vaughan continued to have an excellent first day of swimming, dropping over 3 seconds in his race.
Saturday Sessions
The 12 year old and under swimmers jumped into the pool first in the morning starting with 200M IM. Blayke Taylor touched the wall in 3rd place while Maggie McConachie and Raevyn Maule placed 6th and 9th. There were a lot of other great swims including Eva Beaudry and Madeleine Devroom dropping 9 and 8 seconds. Leah Martin (28 sec.), Brynn Oatway (26 sec.), Emma Mackie (30 sec.) and Sophie Bowen (14 sec.) also had impressive time improvements. Nathan Orava chopped 10 seconds off his seed time to finish in 4th place, jumping 6 seed placements in the process.
In the 100M freestyle, Eva Beaudry finished in 10th and Peighton Kennedy and Alexa Mackie clocked 8 and 7 second time improvements. Other notable swims were had by Norah Faris, Evangeline Esteves, Kenzie Marshall, Olivia Bowen and Sydney Paquet who all posted significantly faster times for this event. For the boys, Rydaar Watt came in 4th overall and Griff Williams finished his race 11 seconds faster than his seed time.
Sam Brundage had a dominant 100M breaststroke win. Emma Mackie was the 2nd fastest 10 year old swimmer. Sophie Bowen had an impressive 10 second time improvement. Boyd Miller also had a great swim, dropping his best time by 12 seconds.
Blayke Taylor was the 200M backstroke second place finisher using a 24 second time improvement. Maggie McCoanchie and Leah Martin both had 8 second best times placing 7th and 10th. Raevyn Maule, Amylee Courchesne, Peighton Kennedy, and Brynn Oatway all achieved big time improvements in the race. Rydaar Watt and William Rupay both took advantage of big time improvements to jump multiple seed positions and finished 6th and 9th, respectively.
In the 100M butterfly, BTSC swimmers Sam Brundage, Alexa Mackie, Madeleine Devroom and Eva Beaudry took the 6th to 9th placements in the top 10. Spphie Bowen, Emma Beland, Kenzie Marshall and Emma Mackie all achieved significantly improved best times. Nathan Orava went 11 seconds faster to finish 5th. Chase Turner also had an excellent swim, taking 18 seconds off his seed time and finishing as the third fastest 10 year old.
Blayke Taylor was the fastest 50M backstroker while Sam Brundage finished 4th improving her time by over 12 seconds. Maggie McCoanchie also cracked the top 10 placing 9th. Kenzie Marshall improved her time by 4 seconds finishing as the 2nd fastest 10 year old. Kayla Yao, Sydney Paquet, Norah Faris and Olivia Bowen all had great big time improvement swims. William Rupay used a 17 second improved time to finish in 10th spot.
Eva Beaudry, Madeleine Devroom and Leah Martin finished 3rd, 4th and 5th in the 400M freestyle while Rydaar Watt made it to the finish in 2nd with a 16 second faster time.
The afternoon session featured the 13 year old and over athletes and featured the SKINS races.
Lucien Vilchez hit the wall first in the 200M backstroke. His teammates, Ben Millar, Griff Seguin and Will McConachie were all top 10 finishers. Ben used a 4 second time improvement to leapfrog multiple seed placements to place 3rd. Griff was the 3rd fastest 15 year old with a 10 second drop in time and Will was the fastest 14 year old ending his race 13 seconds sooner than his seed time. Scotty Sutton and Tyler Millar also posted big time improvements. In the girls races, Shea Gillespie and Ameliya Suleimanov finished 8th and 10th overall. Eva Mankarios had a great swim, establishing a 17 second quicker best time.
In the 100M freestyle, Cole Harrison, Edwin Huang and Finn Taylor clocked 12, 11 and 9 second best times.
In the 200M butterfly, Avery Knight raced to a 1st place result and Clara Vilchez knocked off 10 seconds to climb to 7th place overall and the fastest 14 year old time. Dylan George also saw a 10 second improvement in his 200M fly time while Matt Creasor set a new personal standard that was 21 seconds faster.
Julia Denes finished 3rd in the 100M breaststroke. Other noteworthy swims included Maggie Taylor’s 14 second improvement and 10 and 9 second improvements for Sarah Hankin and Avery Knight. Keira Hornby swam 24 seconds faster than her seed time. For the boys, Scotty Sutton was the 4th place finisher and Will McCoanchie was the fastest 14 year old, setting a new personal best time that is 11 seconds faster. All of the BTSC swimmers in this field established new personal best times. They were Ben Millar, Tyler Millar, Griff Seguin, Dylan George, Nathan Vaughan, Evan Beatty, Cole Harrison, Tate Devroom, Namid Khan, Robert Palermo, and Edwin Huang.
Lucien Vilchez and Evan Betty finished 4th and 6th in the 400M freestyle. Kenzie Sparrow and Clara Vilchez finished 9th and 10th in their 400M event.
Ben Millar, Lucien Vilchez and Scotty Sutton qualified for the special SKINS event by virtue of their FINA points awarded in the 200M IM or 50M freestyle. The 8 swimmers qualified competed in 50M sprints in a stroke randomly chosen where the slowest swimmer in each round is eliminated. Congratulations to Ben Millar for finishing 3rd in the SKINS.
Sunday Sessions
The morning started with 200M freestyle where Eva Beaudry was the 3rd place finisher and top 11 year old. Madeleine Devroom placed 9th. In the boys races, Rydaar Watt was 3rd fastest while Nathan Orava finished 7th.
In the 200M breaststroke, Maggie McCoanchie and William Rupay were the BTSC representatives. Maggie had a 14 second best time and William went 25 seconds faster.
Sam Brundage and Raevyn Maule were top 10 in the 100M backstroke finishing 6th and 10th overall. Amy Courchesne continued to post big time improvements; this time by 27 seconds. Sydney Paquet and Sarah Leahy also posted large time drops of 26 and 14 seconds respectively. William Rupay had a 10 second best time in his swim.
In 200M fly, Rydaar Watt and Nathan Orava raced to 2nd and 3rd place finishes while Madeleine Devroom was 5th in her race.
Blayke Taylor bested 149 other swimmers to convincingly win the 50M freestyle event. Alexa Mackie and Maggie McConachie placed 8th and 10th overall. Chase Turner posted a 5 second best time to finish as the 2nd fastest 10 year old.
Sam Brundage set a new Provincial 50M breaststroke record of 33.42, crushing her previous record by over a second! Her time also qualified her for Canadian Trials. Eva Beaudry placed 10th overall with a new personal best time improvement of 7 seconds. William Rupay used a 30 second improved time to climb to 10th overall in his race.
Blayke Taylor bettered her own 50M butterfly Club record leading the field to finish 1st in a time of 30.01. Sam Brundage also had a great swim to finish 3rd, dropping over 3 seconds. Alexa Mackie finished 8th overall. Other notable swims included Leah Martin’s 10 second personal best time and Sophie Bowen’s 13 second improvement. Leigh Sugden also clocked a 13 second faster time. Rydaar Watt placed 8th overall in his race while Nathan Orava posted a time 13 seconds faster than his seed time.
Blayke Taylor was back in a familiar 1st place for the 400M IM while William Rupay and Raevyn Maule finished 4th and 6th overall.
In the evening session for the older swimmers, the boys 200M freestyle was filled with Barrie Trojans. Ben Millar placed 3rd, breaking the 2 minute barrier. Lucien Vilchez finished 5th and Will McCoanchie and Tyler Millar were 7th and 9th, dropping 11 and 9 seconds respectively. Finn Taylor posted a 19 second time drop. Julia Denes raced to a 7th place finish in the 200M freestyle.
In the 100M butterfly, Avery Knight led the field of 134 swimmers to touch the wall first. Molly Robinson lowered her best time by 21 seconds and Gracelyn Oevering had a 13 second best time. In the boys races, Finn Taylor, Cole Harrison and Dylan George had 16, 15 and 9 second improvements.
Julia Denes’ 200M breaststroke swim earned her a 1st place result. In the boys races, Scotty Sutton swam to a 3rd place finish and Will McConachie went 28 seconds faster than his seed time to earn 7th place and was the fastest 14 year old. Griff Seguin was 9th with a 12 second best time.
In the 100M backstroke, Lucien Vilchez sped to a 1st place finish. Ameliya Suleimanov and Shea Gillespie were top 10 finishers placing 7th and 9th respectively.
In the last event of the meet, Evan Beatty swam to a 5th place in the 400M IM.
