BTSC Crowned Regional Champions!

The Barrie Trojan Swim Club are the Huronia Region champions determined by an exciting weekend of racing at the 2025 Huronia Short Course Regional Championships! Both the girls and boys teams topped the points standings.

Bracebridge was the home of the 2025 Huronia Regional Short Course Championships from Feb. 7 to Feb. 9. BTSC had a large team of almost 120 swimmers competing against other teams within the Huronia region. All of these swimmers achieved the qualifying times required to gain entry into the meet.

There were many highlights over the weekend created by BTSC athletes.

The following is a summary of Trojan swimmers who earned medals for reaching the podium. 

BTSC relay teams were prevalent on the podium

In the 200M free relay for 12 and under girls, the teams of B;ayke Taylor, Sam Brundage, Maggie McConachie and Avah-Skye Miller and Alexa Mackie, Raevyn Maule, Leigh Sugden and Kennedy Jackson won the gold and silver medals respectively. For the boys race, the gold medal was claimed by the team of William Rupay, Rydaar Watt, Ben DePiero, and Nathan Orava.

For the older 200M freestyle relay swimmers, Kaia Hornby, Kenzie Sparrow, Keira Hornby, and Clara Vilchez led the field with a gold medal for the 13-14 year old age group in a Club record time of 1:52.66. In the same race, the team of Harper Ferguson, Eva Mankarios, Emma Vaughan and Molly Robinson claimed the bronze medal. For the 15 year old and over girl’s race, the silver medal was awarded to the team of Taira Vroom, Avery Knight, Noemi Blake and Sarah Hankin. In the boys races, Barrie Trojans finished with gold and silver in the 13-14 year old age group. These teams were Will McConachie, Robert Palermo, Tate Devroom and Edwin Huang, and Owen Oatway, Nikita Manziy, Anton Chaikouski and Namid Khan. For the older boys, Ben Millar, Lucian Vilchez, Dylan Simmons and Scotty Sutton swam to a gold medal result.

In the 200M medley relays, more medals were earned by BTSC teams. For the 12 year old and under girls, gold and silver were won by the teams of Blayke Taylor, Sam Brundage, Maggie McConachie and Avah-Skye Miller in a Club record time of 2:10.57, and Leah Martin, Alexa Mackie, Raevyn Maule and Leigh Sugden. The boys team of Chase Turner, Rydaar Watt, Nathan Orava and William Rupay were also golden.

In Saturday night finals, the older swimmers raced in their medley relays. Gold and silver medals were awarded to the 13-14 year old girls teams of Clara Vilchez, Eva Mankarios, Kaia Hornby and Ameliya Suleimanov, and Keira Hornby, Molly Robinson, Harper Ferguson and Kenzie Sparrow. A gold medal was also claimed by the 15 year old and over girls team of Avery Knight, Kaelyn Vroom, Taira Vroom and Noemi Blake. In the boys races, 13-14 year old teams were gold and silver medal winners. These teams were made up of Tate Devroom, Anton Chaikouski, Robert Palermo and Will McConachie, and Matt Creasor, Nikita Manziy, Edwin Huang and Owen Oatway. The gold medal also came the way of the team of Lucien Vilchez, Scotty Sutton, Ben Millar and Dylan Simmons in the 15 year old and over age group.

There were mixed relay events on Sunday where the BTSC 12 year old and under teams won two gold, one silver and one bronze medal. In the session for the older swimmers, BTSC won 3 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals in these races.

The following are some other fun facts and accomplishments over the weekend

  • BTSC won a total of 335 medals over the course of the competition.

Two BTSC swimmers won gold in each of their individual events.

Madeleine Devroom won 9 individual gold medals, clocking huge best times in each of her races. Her 400M free time of 5:16.20 established a new Club record. Blayke Taylor touched 1st 7 times for individual gold medals in all of her events.

  • There were a number of events where BTSC swimmers swept the podium.

11 year old 800M free: Kennedy Jackson, Eva Beaudry and Leigh Sugden.
12 year old 800M free: Blayke Taylor, Sam Brundage and Maggie McConachie.
13 year old 200M free: Marissa Battrick, Clara Vilchez and Harper Ferguson.
12 year old 100M free: Blayke Taylor, Sam Brundage and Avah-Skye Miller.
10 year old 400M free: Madeleine Devroom, Emma Mackie and Emma Beland.
13 year old 200M back: Marissa Battrick, Kaia Hornby and Keira Hornby.

  • Alessa Darby achieved some more national para.qualifying times and will look to get more in the upcoming long course meets.

It is a highly deserved recognition as Stephanie continues to contribute countless hours to our home meets as a Meet Manager, Officials Coordinator and officiating in general as she continues to work towards her Level IV certification.
