Mississauga Open Meet Highlights

 

The Etobicoke Olympium was the venue for the Mississauga Open swim meet Dec. 13-15, 2024. The Barrie Trojans had a large contingent of athletes who took to the pool for the competition. The other teams competing were Oakville, Toronto, Richmond Hill, Etobicoke, Club Warriors, Burlington, Hamilton, RAMAC, York U and the host, Mississauga.

 

Sam Brundage bettered her 12 year old 50M breaststroke provincial record with a time of 33.68!

 

Friday

 

The meet started on Friday evening with 400M events. Tate Devroom and Will McConachie were boys gold medallists while Blayke Taylor was a girls gold medal winner. Sam Brundage and Avelyn Gregoric won silver medals.

 

Saturday

 

The Saturday afternoon session featured 12 year old and under racing after the morning session determined finals spots for the older swimmers.

 

Blayke Taylor swam 2 seconds faster than her seed time to claim the 100M butterfly top spot.

 

Kennedy Jackson, Emma Vaughan and Chase Turner finished first for their age groups in the 200M backstroke. Chase also led the field in the 50M backstroke to take that gold medal.

 

The 50M breaststroke saw Sam Brundage take gold with her provincial record setting time. The Mackie sisters, Emma and Alexa, were silver medallists in the event for their respective age groups. Rydaar Watt also won a silver medal for his 50M breaststroke.

 

In the 200M individual medley, Sam Brundage finished in the silver medal position.

 

Tate Devroom took top spot in the 100M freestyle. Blayke Taylor accomplished the same feat for the girls race. Kennedy Jackson came third in her race.

 

For the 200M breaststroke, Rydaar Watt and Sam Brundage climbed to the top of the podium. Emma Mackie won a silver medal.

 

For the Saturday night finals, Avelyn Gregoric got BTSC off to a great start with a silver medal swim in the 100M butterfly. Will McConachie followed that up with a gold medal performance and Scotty Sutton took a bronze medal. Will’s time of 1:01.46 was a personal best.

 

Marissa Battrick and Shea Gillespie were 200M backstroke bronze medallists for their age groups. 

 

Kaelyn Vroom earned the gold medal with a personal best time for 200M individual medley. She did the same thing to win the 200M breaststroke gold medal. A best time for Will McConachie allowed him to touch the wall first in the boys race. Kaelyn also earned bronze in her 50M breaststroke final.

 

In the 100M freestyle, Ameliya Suleimanov won the gold and bronze went to Noemi Blake. In the boys final Dylan George earned the silver medal.

 

Will McConachie and Scotty Sutton won silver and bronze medals respectively in the last event of the day, the 200M breaststroke.

      

     

Sunday

 

The morning session had timed finals for the older swimmers.

 

In the 400M individual medley, Marissa Battrick was the gold medallist for 13-14 year olds while Molly Robinson took bronze in the race. Marrissa and Molly had 8 and 9 second best times respectively. Eva Mankarios was 4th with a 13 second best time. Will McConachie won the gold medal for the 13-14 year old boys race.

 

Clara Vilchez was the silver medallist in the 100M backstroke. Ameliya Suleimanov also received a silver medal for her 200M freestyle swim. Dylan George and Scotty Sutton earned silver medals in 200M freestyle as well for their age group.

 

Clara Vilchez and Noemi Blake won silver and bronze medals respectively for their 50M butterfly swims. 

 

In the 50M freestyle, Ameliya Suleimanov won a bronze medal.

 

Avelyn Gregoric won the gold medal in the 200M butterfly and her teammate, Keira Hornby took the bronze. For the boys, Will McConachie is the gold medallist.

 

The afternoon session saw the younger BTSC swimmers racing again.

 

Emma Vaughan took the silver in the first event, the 100M backstroke. 

 

In the 200M freestyle, Kennedy Jackson broke a 15 year old Club record and finished in the gold medal position with a time of 2:28.70. Blayke Taylor (gold), Sam Brundage (silver) and Emma Vaughan (bronze) swept the medals for the 11-12 year old race, each of them bettering their seed times by over 4 seconds. Tate Devroom won the silver medal in the boys race.

 

Sam Brundage and Tate Devroom claimed golds in the 50M butterfly.

 

Edwin Huang and Blayke Taylor earned silver medals in the 50M freestyle. Kennedy Jackson took home a bronze.

 

Sam Brundage continued to dominate breaststroke, breaking another Club record! This time it was the 100M distance in a time of 1:14.31, more than 2 seconds faster than her seed time. Alexa Mackie finished in the bronze medal position.

 

Kennedy Jackson won another gold medal in 200M butterfly, taking 30 seconds off her previous best time. Blayke Taylor also climbed to the top of the podium again in the same event for her age group. Edwin Huang was the bronze medallist for the boys 200M butterfly.

 

In the evening session 800M freestyle was on tap. 

 

Shea Gillespie earned a silver medal. Keira Hornby, Kylie Sarabura and Dylan George all won bronze medals.

 

Other notable swims over the weekend included Jessica Enwright who went 27 seconds faster than her 50M backstroke seed time to finish 6th. Harper McGill was 24 seconds faster than her seed time in her 100M freestyle. Raevyn Maule finished 6th in the 200M breaststroke with a 38 second time improvement. Harper Ferguson took off 17 seconds for her 800M freestyle and achieved her first Ontario Swimming Championship qualifying time.
