Ontario Junior International 2024 Highlights - OJIs
The Barrie Trojans participated at the Ontario Junior International competition held by Swim Ontario at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre Dec. 12 -12, 2024.
There were 84 clubs participating at this prestigious meet. BTSC had 9 athletes who achieved the fast qualifying standards.

Day One
Alessa Darby swam her preliminary 200M IM in a provincial record setting time for the SM6 classification. Her time was 5 seconds faster than where she was seeded. At finals, Alessa rebroke the record with a time of 4:25.50. Kate Smith had a personal best time of 3:06.06 to finish 4th in the same event.
Taira Vroom swam an impressive personal best time of almost 20 seconds to convincingly win the 1500M freestyle event. Her time of 16:23.81 earned the Ontario Junior International gold medal for the event.
The BTSC mixed relay team of Ben Millar, Taira Vroom, Lucian Vilchez and Kaia Hornby placed 6th in the 4x50M freestyle race. Their time of 1:41.31 was 3 seconds faster than their entry time.
Day Two
Kaia Hornby earned a spot in the B final with an over 2 second best time in the 200M freestyle. With this time, Kaia jumped 12 places in seed position to earn the B-final race.
Griff Seguin swam a personal best time in the 200M freestyle as the youngest athlete in the field.
Avery Knight swam best times in the 100M butterfly and 50M backstroke to book spots in the A final for both events. Her 29.45 time in 50M back preliminary race is a new Club record! Avery went on to break another Club record in her 100M butterfly final with a time of 1:00.85 which also earned her a bronze medal.
Ben Millar qualified for the 400M individual medley A final with a 6 second personal best time.
Taira Vroom finished 7th in the 200M freestyle and 9th in the 400M individual medley.
The girls 4x200M freestyle relay team of Taira Vroom, Kaia Hornby, Julia Denes and Avery Knight came 5th with a time of 8:22.98, 6 seconds better than their seed time.
Day Three
Taira Vroom qualified for the A final and Kaia Hornby used a 3 second best time, and new Club record, to make the B final of the 200M butterfly. Ben Millar also used a best time to qualify for the B final in the same event. Taira placed 7th in the final. Kaia bettered her Club record time from the preliminary swim to set a new standard of 2:18.61. Ben swam a new best time of 2:05.41 in his final.
Avery continued a streak of best times to earn a spot in the 100M backstroke B final. In the final she broke a Club record by stopping the clock at 1:02.26.
In the 400M freestyle event, Taira Vroom raced to a spot in the A final and Griff Seguin bettered his own Club record with a time of 4:05.60. In her final, Taira had an amazing race, taking the bronze medal with a personal best time of 4:12.33.
Kate Smith swam a personal best time of 34.88 to take the bronze medal in the 50M freestyle event. She followed that up with a 4th place in the 50M butterfly.
The 4x100M freestyle relay team of Taira Vroom, Kaia Hornby, Julia Denes and Avery Knight finished the day with a 7th place finish.
Day Four
Alessa Darby and Kate Smith swam their preliminary 100M freestyles as a warm up for finals. Kate won a bronze medal and Alyssa placed 6th in the final.
Griff Seguin bettered his own 100M freestyle Club record with 55.36 swim.
Avery Knight jumped 11 positions to claim a spot in the 200M backstroke B final and then went 4 seconds faster in that final to win it and set a new Club record time of 2:11.87. Lucian Vilchez had a great preliminary swim, dropping almost 2 seconds to earn a spot in the 200M backstroke A final where he finished 9th.
Kaia Hornby bettered her own Club record with a 800M freestyle swim timed at 9:08.31.
Taira Vroom dominated the 800M freestyle final to win the gold medal and cap off a great weekend for BTSC swimmers at Ontario Junior International!
