The Canadian Olympics Trials took place May 13 - 19 at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre. There were 865 athletes representing 150 clubs vying for positions on the Canadian Olympic Swim team headed to Paris in July. BTSC had 15 swimmers who qualified for this prestigious event and shared the pool with many of the swimmers who have become household names in our country. It is the largest team that BTSC has sent to the event. Our team was: Julia Denes, Ajete Eggers, Will Debroux, Baris Kartoglu, Emma-Lee Jacques, Avery Knight, Ben Millar, Patryk Danda, Adriana Martone, Laila Oravsky, Lucien Vilchez, Jordi Vilchez, Taira Vroom,Sydney Colquoun and Kaia Hornby.

The week was characterized by fast swimming with many Canadian provincial and national records broken and of course a world record performance by Summer Macintosh in the 400M individual medley. All eight competitors in the men’s 200M free final had times under 1:50 including BTSC’s Jordi Vilchez and six swimmers in the 200M men’s butterfly final reached the end of the race in under 2:00.

BTSC swimmers had awesome performances with a number of them resulting in places in event finals

  • Laila Oravsky and Taira Vroom finished 3rd and 4th respectively in the 1500M freestyle. Laila’s swim earned her a bronze medal for the Junior category. Of note, Kaia Hornby qualified for and swam this event as a 13 year old.
  • In the 800M freestyle Laila finished 8th and Taira 12th which put them 5th and 8th respectively in the Junior category.
  • Jordi Vilchez finished 4th in the 200M butterfly final, 6th in the men’s 400M freestyle final and accomplished the same placements in the finals of the 200M and 400M IM. He was 8th in the 200M freestyle final in a time of 1:49.67.

In general, our BTSC swimmers saved some of their fastest swimming for Trials with many personal best times achieved and many Club records being broken.

Congratulations to all of our BTSC swimmers for their fantastic achievements. We hope to see them again in future along with other swimmers from our Club in future Canadian Trials!

Thank you to all of the BTSC swimmers and parents who went to cheer on our athletes and special thank you to Carlos Vilchez for organizing the t-shirts that really made our spectators stand out. Thank you also to Jess Keeling for the social media posts highlighting our swimmers throughout the event.
